d. ταπεινός can also mean sometimes “modest” and “obedient.” Xenoph. Ag., 11, 11 describes the virtues of Agesilaos and calls him inter al.: καὶ τῷ μεγαλόφρονι οὐ σὺν ὕβρει ἀλλὰ σὺν γνώμῃ ἐχρῆτο· τῶν γοῦν ὑπεραύχων καταφρονῶν τῶν μετρίων ταπεινότερος ἦν. If the meaning here is “modest,” the term takes on the sense of “obedient” in Isoc. Or., 3, 56: The obedience of subjects to government—ταπεινοὺς μὲν εἶναι χρὴ πρὸς τὴν ἀρχὴν τὴν ἐμήν—is the presupposition of
